This article pissed me off. I mean come on, it’s a movie. Can’t these people find anything better to do. A federal investigation? Decide for yourself.
At a festival that features several films with sexual content, including full male nudity and a documentary about bestiality, a Southern Gothic tale that includes the rape of a young girl is causing the biggest stir.
“Hounddog” is the story of Lewellen, a girl played by 12-year-old Dakota Fanning, who is growing up in the 1960s South. She is a free-spirit obsessed with Elvis Presley and has little supervision by her abusive father and alcoholic grandmother.
Even before the first screening of “Hounddog” at the Sundance Film Festival this week, a Christian film critic, citing Fanning’s age, decried the movie as child abuse, and Roman Catholic activist Bill Donohue called for a federal investigation.

Its because of people like those that issues so devastating remains hidden and over 70% of rape or child molestations dont ever get reported. I say what the director did and how fanning has acted is brilliant and bold. People need to see the reality and somebody has to show it. That is exactly what she did. Bravo to her.

I think there are some cultural reasons for this:
1. child abuse and molestation are very taboo in US society
2. in the States we tend to look at things through rose colored glasses - there is a prevailing optimism about society (france for one is the opposite - and damn do their films reflect it)
One time in Turkey I was shopping at a grocery store with my cousin and a little kid tripped and fell down right in front of him. He picked the little kid up and told him that he was ‘ok, let’s go find your mom’ who was not far off.
Now had that happened in the US…in fact that would not happen in the US.
I remember reading in Paul McCartney’s biography that he was almost beaten up several times because he used to watch the children playing at the school near his NY apartment for song ideas/inspiration.
srry for the long comment, wait ain’t this my site? i forgive myself
