The Dog Days Of Summer

July 30, 2007 by Anil P.

In the summer, the Internets are slow. Less stuff happens…posts to ramp up to their usual “too many at a time” pace next week.

Although expect a few drips and drizzles here and there for the meantime.

So give all of your dorky friends and co-workers who keep your machines nice and running a Diet Coke, kiss, or latest copy of Heros on DVD.

Repeating The Trojan Horse Trick

At various locations these two guys from the Australian show ‘The Chaser’ try to get a real Trojan horse (filled with soldiers) through security checkpoints. The only ones who didn’t fall for it? The Turkish consulate.

Travel More Than 4 Hours Doubles Blot Clot Risk

July 25, 2007 by Anil P.

The risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) – the collective name for DVTs and pulmonary embolisms (clots in the lungs) increases dramatically after 4 hours of travel in a plane, car, or otherwise.

Blood clots can form in the lower limbs during long periods of immobility – and can kill if they travel to the lungs.

Although the overall risk is low, being overweight, very tall or short (short is less than 1.6m cough, cough), and women taking oral contraceptives are more vulnerable. Keep in mind also that your risk remains elevated up to 4 weeks after traveling.

Breast Milk No Longer Threat Either

On the same TSA page noting the ban on lighters is to be lifted August 4, is another notice that breast milk is good to go as well.

From their site:

Q. Why is breast milk not a threat?
A. Breast milk is a medical necessity and it is being classified as such. It must be declared at the checkpoint.

Q. Do passengers carrying breast milk need to taste it to prove it is not a liquid explosive?
A. No. We will not ask a traveler to taste breast milk.

The second question is priceless.

Lighters Allowed Back On Planes August 4

Smokers rejoice! On August 4, 2007 lighters will no longer be prohibited on flights to, from, and within the US. (Torch lighters will continue to be banned.)

Around 22,000 lighters are confiscated around various checkpoints across the US. Having them lifted by security agents doesn’t really provide any additional security as matches? are allowed on airplanes and mostly because you need something worth lighting.

If the TSA catches the larger threats (aka. bombs, explosives, etc.) then bringing your Zippo along isn’t a problem.

Scary but Safe…

…safe from illness, that is. Sharks are one of the few animals, if not the only one, that I am scared of. So it scares me even more to find out they are the world’s healthiest animals. Apparently they are immune to every disease and even cancer (that we know of). Crazy, huh?

Bored? Here are some more interesting facts… check it out! :)

Hope You’re Having Fun!

…And if you’re not, you will be after reading this! In honor of aop1980’s absence, (he’ll be in Sweden and Germany for a bit), I decided to change this Friday’s post a little. Instead of the usual “Dirty French Word of the Week,” I present you the dirty Swedish and German words of the week! These will definitely come in handy in those certain G-rated situations (i.e. while at work) ;)

Jidder: Swedish word for “bullshit”.
“Aop1980 smells like a monkey, and that’s no jidder!”

Dumpfbacke: German word literally meaning “dumbcheek”. Basically the equivalent of dimwit, stupid, or boring.
“Aop1980, you’re such a dumpfbacke!”

**Note: I have nothing against aop1980, he is only the butt of my jokes because I care about him. :D
