iTunes doesn’t let you sync your iPod in more than one location. After trying a few alternatives, I was able to copy all of my music off the iPod to my computer with YamiPod - then re-sync.

Having just installed a fresh copy of Vista, I ended up having my entire digital music collection left on my iPod. YamiPod is (free) and available for Mac, Windows, and Linux machines.
