Create A Simple, Temporary Travel Email Account

June 30, 2008 by Anil P.

Stay in touch with your friends and family without jeopardizing the information in your email account by setting up a temporary travel account.

There are several free and quick ways to do this without having to create a huge number of additional accounts.

Create A Travel Email Account – Open a new email account with your current provider.? The new account should be your regular email address with “trav” at the end of it (i.e. “cindy@yahoo.com” becomes “cindytrav@yahoo.com”).

  • Hotmail and Yahoo - These two email providers don’t have forwarding capabilities, but the free download GetMail can do it for you. Have all of your emails forwarded to the new account to protect your privacy abroad.
  • Set up a vacation response (Gmail can do this too) telling your friends and family that you’re out traveling and to contact your ‘trav’ address.
  • Gmail - Forwarding capabilities are built it as well strong filtering capabilities (Settings > Filters).
  • In your primary account setup a filter for any words, people, or businesses you don’t want to be bothered by while on vacation. Have only the email you want delivered to your “trav” account forwarded.

Travel Unravel: What’s A Cheap Way To See The Caribbean From The US?

June 27, 2008 by Anil P.

I’ve started getting emails, chats, and comments asking me a variety of travel related questions. “Travel Unravel” is a new series where I tried to answer these questions in a quick and concise manner with the help of readers in the comments.

Lost At Sea asks: What’s A Cheap Way To Go To The Caribbean From The US?

Your best bet is to take a cruise, especially if you’re on the US east coast. Most cruise lines take off from one of the major port cities like New York, Baltimore, or Norfolk. Most cruises for a week of Caribbean sailing include room, food (through buffet’s), and entertainment like casinos and club life for around $600-800. Alcohol is extra, but those can be bought duty free at one of the islands you’re bound to stop to.

You’ll be able to visit 2 or 3 hotspots like Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico and take “excursions” like snorkling, hiking, or mountain biking. (Excursions are extra cost.) Also, Americans and EU citizens won’t need visas for stays less than 30 days at almost all of the Caribbean countries. Check out Travelzoo, they usually has good deals on cruises and package vacations to the area.

Hope this helps, if not ask away in the comments – readers, don’t hesitate to hop in either!

Travel smarter,
-foxnomad

Buy Multiple Airline Tickets One At A Time For Reduced Fares

June 26, 2008 by Anil P.

Purchase round trip airline tickets for you and those traveling with you one at a time to take advantage of reduced fares. Most airlines only offer the cheapest coach fares on a limited number of seats which round trip book systems may ignore.

When you shop for multiple tickets, and there aren??t enough seats available at the lowest ticket price, the reservation system automatically kicks bookings up to the next price level.

On a recent search for flights from Dallas to Frankfurt for a July trip, Mr. Seaney turned up a round-trip ticket at www.americanairlines.com for $1,431. When he searched for multiple tickets, the lowest ticket price jumped to $1,536.

To make sure that you are in fact getting the best deal follow this search routine based from the least to most amount of planning time available. Start by opening 3 Internet browser windows.

The History Of foXnoMad

Yesterday marked the 2 year anniversary of this site so I thought I’d take you down memory lane for the day. Most of you are new readers who jumped on along the way and visit foxnomad for tips on traveling smarter – but didn’t start out that way.

In The Beginning

About this time in 2006 my group of friends began to move out across the world. We wanted a good way to keep in touch and came to the conclusion that a collective blog would be a good way to hear about each others adventures. This blog started out as aop1980.com and had several authors.

All Over The Place

Initially, the 6 authors (including myself) wrote on a regular basis about anything and everything. My first post ever was about my mandatory military service. Other posts ranged from Michael Jackson to dirty French words. There was no real focus and eventually the authors began to lose their enthusiasm for writing and I was the only one left.

foXnoMad Turns 2 Years Old Today!

June 24, 2008 by Anil P.

Two years ago today foXnoMad was born from its jumbled predecessor shifting and evolving into the travel blog you see before you. Tomorrow I’ll give you a history of where the site came from, where it is now, and the direction I plan to take it.

Until then, I’m going to give my typing fingers a rest, kick my feet up, and maybe take a few birthday shots later tonight. Here are some of the most popular posts of the last year.

I’d also like to thank all my readers, family, and friends who read, leave comments, and send ideas (and grammar corrections) my way. And a special thanks to my wife for putting up with my many hours in front of the laptop? – writing posts, making code corrections, and responding to emails – all of which have improved because of your support and input.
